You don’t “make” them a potty area, they won’t use a specified spot for that, instead you just fill their cage about 2 inches deep (on the bottom) with ASPEN shavings. DON’T USE PINE SHAVINGS…the oils in pine shavings is toxic to them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can find aspen shavings almost anywhere….and they do not contain oils, and are basically hypoallergenic to the hamsters. Get them a water bottle that hangs from the inside, top ledge of cage….hamster food in a lil dish…and a few toys…they like those colorful plasic tunnels made for hamsters…and that’s about it. DO NOT USE KITTY LITTER EITHER…it has deodorizing agents in it that can be very very harmful!!!!!!!!!!! Oh yeah, another thing they like is if you put some regular cotton balls in their cage, they will shread it up and make a bed out of it!!!
They make litter boxes for hamsters and litter. They are made by Super Pet. You can get them at your local pet store. What you do is find out were your hamster goes potty and then put a little bitof his litter ( Carefresh works really well and now it comes in pretty colors) that he has gone potty on into the litter box. He will smell where he goes potty and he will use it! It comes with a scoop. We use it in our hamster cages at the store and it makes clean up much easier!
Pine
Here is a link of a brand that I use:http://www.kaytee.com/products/search/?p…
I recommend what the Humane Society of the United States recommends: Line the bottom of the tank with plain white paper, and add dry timothy hay (available at your local pet supply store) or shredded white paper for burrowing and nest-building. Avoid using cedar or wood shavings, which can cause respiratory problems.
I highly recommend some of the different brands of recycled paper bedding (also available at pet supply stores and cheap!) for your habitat. It is absorbant, environmentally consious and does not pose a health risk to your little furry friend.
