What Kind Of Cage Is Best For A Hamster?

I am thinking about getting a dwarf hamster. I had a friend in high school who kept her hamster in a glass aquarium. It seems that the most common kind are the cage style ones with bars. Do you think one or the other is better or does it not really matter? Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well we have this one and our hamster loves it!! http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js…
But if you want to go smaller this is all the smaller i would gohttp://www.petsmart.com/product/index.js…
Also make sure your wheel is always plastic and not wire. it will rip there tiny feet off
Glass???
They cant breath in it get one of these 2 or the one Danger Erin Reccomended
I got my dwarf hamster yesterday!
And I use a 10 gallon tank. Its definitely the BEST cage to use, especially the ones with the screens on top, and they snap in (to be secure).
Also, some hamsters chew on the plastic ones, the plastic ones may look pretty, but dwarf hamsters LOVE to come out of their cages, so they will do almost anything to escape.
They have one specially made for dwarf hamsters that is a little smaller then the original one, and its about $11 at Petco. Totally worth the money! Because who want a cheap squeaky wheel?
They’re super easy to clean, and the hamsters could NEVER escape!
May I also suggest the “silent spinner”. It’s the best thing I ever got for my hamster, its a silent wheel, and she never gets off of it!
Well, Good Luck & Have Fun!
it really is upto you.
the type of cage i wont suggest to you is the plastic ones
(like this, or similar: http://demo.sitewizard.co.uk/images/prod… )
hamsters are very good at chewing through things, and plastic is not a problem – they are more like chew toys than cages really, and a hamster would quickly escape.
besides that, they dont give half as much ventilation as the delicate little animals need – not good cages at all.
but as for the glass and wire ones…
it depends on your preferences on which one you get – dwarf hamsters may be able to easily squeeze through the bars on regular wire hamster cages, but you can get ones with smaller bar spacing. they give loads of ventilation for the hamster, and give it lots of places to climb.
if a screen top is on the glass tank then they’ll give enough ventilation too. the hamster cant climb the glass like it can wires, but theres less risk of it escaping.
i’ve always kept hamsters in wire cages as you get more space for your money typically than the glass tanks (and partly because my lizards are in the glass tanks).
…or you could go for the both of best worlds and get a wire tank topper for your glass tank
