russian hamsters are nice pets , they are gentle and once tamed , easy to handle , they aren’t to smelly and can be kept in pairs so they dont get lonely , the actual animal is cheap and after you’ve set up its home they are pretty low maintenance , another idea , quite like the last is a chinese hamster although males cant be kept together , syrian hamsters are friendlier and easier to handle once tamed but are slightly smellier due to their larger size , trhis can be overcome by frequnent cleaning and using a hamster litter tray which can be changed daily , if you clean a syrian twice a week its normally ok .
a rats they are Intelligent
they will play with your son they are very sociable and friendly they do not bite and if you clean cage out once a week they do not smell male rats are friendlier than females over the years we have has 6 females and we now have 3 male ones i would get 2 of them so they have company also they are cheap to keep and are not nocturnal like hamsters who sleep all day and awake all night they don’t mind you bathing them you can buy rat shampoo play with them every day as baby’s and let them out of the cage to play you can train them like dogs ours will come to us when called we give them a treat as a reward if they come to us also see below

ALL rodents/ bird will smell if you dont care for it..and rats are very clean! you can teach them to use a litter box!!
dont get guinea pigs trust me//personal expierence!!
Dwarf hamsters are cheap, easy, and generally nice. But you should clean their cage at least once a month. Parakeets are good too, but they get lonely, so it would be better to get two if that’s what you decide on.
probably Leopard Gecko. They are easy to care but more pricey but it’s worth because they can make Great pet! Research Pets if what is right for your Son’s first Pet
Get a fish.
No smells, no dander, no disgusting cages.
Dont get a bird and dont get a reptile if i were you i would get some tropical fish. need warm water but they are more exiting.
