Just bought one! It is a wire cage, but it is shaped like a house. It is intended as a bird cage, but I bought it for two gerbils to have lots of room. I have created and added different floors in the cage. I bought mine for about $45 at an independant pet store, and spent about $25 for additional materials for floors and ladders. I think I saw similar cages at Petsmart.
Same as above. Is this anything serious, or just normal behavior. It has never done it before and we have had him almost 2 years.
i got a new gerbil 2day and was just wondering if it was alright to put it in a big tote made of plastic. will it jump out?( it is to my knees and i am 5 ft.) thx for the answers!

I had a pet rabbit many years back. Now I want a small pet again. But I am not going for a rabbit because my earlier rabbit used to chew electrical wires and other stuff. So I want to know more about guinea pig, hamster or any other small creature that you can keep as a pet.
I think that would be fun!
What is Salmonellahttp://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dbmd/diseasein…
Most pets carry the Salmonella bacteria in their gut without suffering the affects themselves. Reptiles and amphibians should also be on your list. There have been more reports with reptiles being the problem then any other pet.
Salmonella doesn’t become a problem with pets unless their human care-giver gets sloppy and careless with the hygiene both for themselves and their pets.
A good example is with the red-eared slider turtle that is slowly making a come-back as a popular pet. The turtle was banned from the pet market for quite awhile some years ago after it was reported that a little boy became sick with Salmonella poisoning from his turtle. As it turned out the boy had become bored of his pet and and became lazy in keeping the turtle’s environment clean. The Salmonella bacteria grew in the tank and the boy handled his pet without washing his hands afterwards.
I recently learned that rats carry Salmonella but if it were a problem with rodents then I should be sick by now. I’ve been keeping at least 50 pet rats at a time for the last 10 years. I’ve been sick with a cold or flu twice since I started keeping rats, I use to get sick once a year before them.
The health profession would have you believe that Salmonella is a real problem with sensationalism and scare tactics.

And don’t blame Salmonella just on the pets. There’s been a lot of reports of foods contaminated with Salmonella as well.http://search.yahoo.com/search?search=Fo…

I was thinking of getting my hamster a new cage. She has nibbled holes in the one she has now but only tiny ones so she can’t get out through them. I saw this big cage in Pets at Home and thought of upgrading her. I know hamsters like things that they know, so will she be okay in this new cage? I will put in her things from her current cage. She is 9 months old and has lived in her current cage since the day I got her.
I sometimes see her doing this weird twitch when she’s laying down.
if you have ever taken your gerbil to a gerbil show and come out in a decent place like 3rd or so. what did you do to make your gerbil look like a show gerbil?
