I’ve had gerbils and guinea pigs and enjoyed having them both.
I’ll tell you that they both stink and neither are really social. It’s just a matter of keeping their cage clean which can be a nuisance sometimes. Still, if I were to choose one or the other I’d say the guinea pig. The biggest drawback to them is that they squeak at night rather loudly and they can be annoying. Cute… but annoying LOL.
gerbil but i would recommend a hamster
guinea pig. they are so cute & easy to take care of.
get a teddy bear hamster very friendly but out of those 2 i would say gerbil. guinea pigs stink and bite hard
If you take care of it and change its bedding when you’re supposed to it shouldn’t be that smelly. I’ve had guinea pigs before, and rabbits, but I haven’t had a gerbil so all I can say is guinea pigs are cool but gerbils are smaller and might be easier to take care of.
Guinea Pigs just sit in your hand and squeak a lot- they aren’t very active but they can be ok alone. Gerbils are VERY active and more fun. I reccomend getting 2 Gerbils or they get lonely. Also, Gerbils in a 10-Gallon Aquarium smell fine. Their teeth don’t ever stop growing so it’s reccomended to have something cardboard or wooden in their cage/aquarium at all times. You can attach a metal cage with an aquarium to make it have a lot of levels. You can put Gerbils in a shoe box and they’ll find a way to have fun! Guinea Pigs aren’t very social or active so if you want a pet that is active social and fun, Guinea Pigs aren’t right. Plus, Guinea Pigs cages are usually way bigger than Gerbils and they HAVE to be metal… Gerbils are way more fun. I am reading a book on Gerbils right now called “Gerbils The Complete Guide To Gerbil Care” and it talks about costs to behavior of the Gerbils to if they’re the right pet for you. In the book, it says that everything, including 2 Gerbils, the housing itself (cage) a wheel and other toys, food, bedding and other small things- $75 dollars. Then $5-10 a month! They’re the cheapest pet besides fish (and seriously, how much fun can you have with fish? They don’t even have fur!) and are NOT hard to take care of at all.
GET A GERBIL!
(before you get either pet make sure you read a lot about them- how to hold them, behavior, food, ect.)
Good luck with your new furry friend!
P.S. There are sprays and things to make the cages smell better. They work pretty well but you still need to make sure that you clean out the bedding often.
Guinea Pigs make alot of noise. Gerbils are better
i used to have a guinea pig they’re really cute i think you should get one, they’re like a little bit better than a hampster because they’re more almost like a dog but in a minature animals (like you can’t let them roam your house or back yard without keeping an eye on them) but still, they’re pretty fun
gerbal..guinea pigs smell so bad!!but better to play with…
Guinea pigs are sweet and fun and that’s what I would recommend, but be prepared for a lot of upkeep. I would got for a female, they tend to produce less odor in their urine, and aren’t as dirty. I have a little boy, I love him to death, but he gets stinky! I have to clean his cage twice a week, and I play with him everyday. I would recommend a hommade grid cage. go for the 2X3 grid size, and you can find directions on how to make them by typing in “grid cage guinea pig” on google. Also, you can by kits on ebay, that’s where I got mine. GOOD LUCK!
Gerbils! But if you get them you have to get 2 or else they get lonley.
Guinea Pig, i have had 2 and they are great!!!
gerbil..much cuter
gerbil…guinea pigs turn out fat and HUGE
Gerbils hurt when they bite but they are cuuuuuute and guinea pigs are cute! So get etheir they are both really cute!
Well they both smell sort of bad but gerbils are so much easier to keep clean and the scent isn’t as bad as a guinea.
guinea pigs last longer i think cuz i had 11 gerbils in the span of 7 moinths trust me they dont last long.
which one do ya like the most ? a guinea pig whistles a lot an sense they are bigger they will have more of a smell, now gerbils mate an reproduce rather fast, guinea pigs are sorta different , they love veggies and when they have babies the Baby’s run out of the mother i mean walking and everything, guinea pigs have a rather embarrassing way of sexing them , ya have to pull down on their nether regions , you can not tell what sex they are unless you find out from the pet shop dealer. guinea pigs are kinda welcoming when they see you they whistle like they are saying hi ….. Dragon Lady…
Gerbil lovers will recommend gerbils, and guinea lovers the same. I am a guinea lover/owner, and I definitely say get a piggy! They really are easy to keep, they pee in the same spot (generally), they can be litter box trained (requires effort and continuity on the owners behalf), *they still poo wherever they are at the time (no biggy, they are little pellets), they are social, they chirp and talk to you, they love to snuggle, they are delicate, but not like the smaller rodents. If you are going to get a piggy, I encourage you to adopt one from your local shelter or rescue. There are so many that need homes! Good luck! P.S. don’t buy a cage with wire on the bottom, this hurts pigs feet, and are so difficult to heal!
I’ve personally had both and both can smell horribly
but only if you dont clean the cage.
i would steer clear from both of them, as they can become quite hostile towards strangers and even their owners.
i believe that a giraffe will suit you just fine, considering the circumstances :]
How about a dog?
I think guinea pigs are better.
My gerbil isn’t as interesting as my guinea pigs, but i still love him!
both of the animals smell, gerbils probably smell a bit better but if your looking for the fun of looking after it, guinea pigs are probably more fun and sweet!
I don’t like making the choice of pet for anyone … but I can give you some good information to help you make THE BEST choice for yourself.
1. What ‘size’ is the pet? How large a cage will it have to live in? Is there room in my bedroom, or would it have to stay in another room or outside?
2. What time of day will this animal be awake (Guinea Pigs are awake during the day, Hamsters are Nocturnal, Rats sleep and wake both day and night, Gerbils … I don’t know, and you’ll have to find that out yourself.
3. What does my pet need to eat? If I buy the ‘pet food’ will they NEED extras, and what are they, and how much?
4. What is YOUR ‘lifestyle’ … many kids want pets, and think it’s fine to just ‘leave’ and let their parents take care of them … and some do this without ‘reminding’ their parents that the pet needs care while they are gone. That’s okay for a few hours, but if you are ‘gone overnight’ and aren’t coming back ‘first thing’ in the morning, you have to MAKE SURE your pet gets clean food and fresh water, at the very LEAST. If you are going to camp for two weeks, first ask your parents to ‘care’ for you pet … or do you have a ‘friend’ who can’t ‘own’ a pet but may ‘pet-sit’ for you?
Since your pets are both ‘rodent-like’ let me tell you one thing .. I’ve owned all four of the pets I listed, and to my mind, a RAT is the best pet of all. Their cages are not nearly as ‘smelly’ and they can actually be taught to ‘clean them themselves’ as long as you provide an ‘open stack’ (about 5 sheets) of newspaper, and a pile (another 5-10 sheets) of ‘stripped’ newspaper so they can build their own nest. All you have to do is watch them do the ‘cleaning’ then when they have removed all of the ‘dirty paper’ onto the OPEN newspaper, you can ‘wipe out’ the cage and put some fresh newspaper ‘cut to fit’ the bottom and let your rat pull the ‘stripped paper’ in to start ‘chewing’ for nesting. Rats actually LOVE doing this WITH their owners … and once a rat has cleaned it’s own cage once, it will want to do it that way EVERY TIME. Rats are far smaller than guinea pigs, they don’t need ‘wheels’ to play on (although they do like ‘tunnels’ to crawl through, and ‘observation towers’ to get them higher so they can ‘look at the world’ … and I’ve even had one that lived in a bird cage who like to ‘hang over’ the ‘perch’ like she was dead, and ‘lounge’ on the open door … Rats are the most ‘social’ of the pets with their ‘human pets’ and they LOVE to play … and the more ‘complicated’ the game (maze, moving objects from place to place, etc.) the HAPPIER they’ll be.
Well Gerbils are very low maintenance to look after, you would need a glass tank to keep them in, as they eat anything that is plastic. Gerbil’s can be handled, and become more friendlier the more you do so (like any small animal really).
Guinea Pig’s are lots of fun as well, although they do need more space, and a run outside on the grass, they adore the fresh air. You must feed them plenty of fresh veg and fruit, and if you have a long hair guinea, then you would have to do regular grooming. But they can be rewarding also, they chat to you when they are happy and hungry, and can be handled.
If you want something social and fun, I would say out of these 2, probably the Guinea Pig would like to be cuddled and played with more than the Gerbil! But its preference.
Go along to whether your buying them from, and take a look at both, and see which one you like the most off, you will soon make up your mind. Also read up care and information on both of them before you buy them!
Let us know what you pick!
