I really want a hamster, but I’m not sure if I can afford it. I heard it costs about $80 startup including cage, etc. and then about $20 per month? Also what kind of cage/wheel/ball should I get for a black bear syrian?

The cost differs a lot depending on exactly what you decide to get. When I got my set-up, it cost around $80. On the other hand, I’ve seen hamster cages ranging from $20 to $50. The ones that are $20 are typically more simple and only one story whereas the $50 ones tend to be much more elaborate. Here is a general idea of things you’ll need, the prices are all estimates:
Cage ($20 to $50)
Water Bottle ($5)
Wheel (assuming the cage doesn’t have one, $5 to $10)
Food Dish ($2)
Bedding (timothy hay is recommended, $5 to $10 depending on the size of the bag you get)
Food ($5 to $10)
Ball ($5)
And depending on the type of hamster you get, it’ll cost around $15 itself. Do you know what the closest pet store to you is? If so, you can look online for their website and plan out everything you want to get to give you a general idea about the price. On top of that, you might be able to get a used one for cheaper on craigslist or ebay as well. Make sure you research the type of hamster you get as well since different ones have different care instructions. Good luck!
Get a gerbil! They are better. They are nicer. They are cleaner.
I just googled that to prove my point:http://mm-gerbils.tripod.com/id9.html
Also, I have two female gerbils (best in same sex pairs.) I do not have much income at all, but I can afford them easily. If you do get gerbils, do not get the plastic cages, the gerbils will escape. Get a cage with a plastic tray and wire for the walls.
I started with the hamster starter kit: http://www.petco.com/product/12283/Super… However, you will need to get a better cage with metal wheel and ramps because after a while (about a year, I think. maybe less.) the gerbils will have chewed the plastic. Gerbils can eat the same food and use the same toys and supplies as hamsters.
a hamster itself will cost 8-20 dollars. you can get a small metal barred cage to start our. probably around 20 -30 dollars.food and a dish will have a total of about 30 dollars. that’s with a water bottle and a holder. wood chips are about 15 dollars for a medium bag. A wheel and a ball are about 10 dollars each. you might also want to get some wet tail medication too. that’s about 15 dollars. for a grand total you are looking at 98 to 100 dollars to start up.now you don’t need a ball a wheel and wet tail meds to start. that puts you at 73 to 95 dollars. Not to mention the great responsibility hamsters are. they are nocturnal animals. you want to make sure that the door to your animals cage is securely locked or blocked. especially if you have dogs or cats. a hamster of mine was recently attacked by my dog. may patrick rest in peace. But, we are proud to take care of the recent Simba. They do cost alot of money and they do make noise at night so beware of that. i would read up before you get one. petland.com and petsmart.com have information on small rodents like hamsters gerbils and rabbits.
ok there is a really good website about hamsters and you can check it out and tells you where you can get thing and exactly what you need and how much it would be all together please check it out
